Create and manage a Charitable Allowance

Charitable Allowance is a simple tool to teach your kids and teens about generosity, financial literacy, and how to contribute to the world around them.

Give them a regular allowance to donate to charities and causes they care about. Whether it’s rescuing animals, helping the environment, or supporting a hobby they love, they’ll get the chance to develop social responsibility and a sense of purpose.

Creating and managing a Charitable Allowance is only available on the web and is not yet available on the mobile app.

Create a Charitable Allowance

Creating a Charitable Allowance is quick and easy—start by choosing who you want to give an allowance to. We’ll set up an Impact Account linked to yours where the allowance will be added. This Impact Account is under your kid’s name, but owned by you.

If you’re new to Charitable Impact:

Visit charitableimpact.com/charitable-allowance.
Under Your email, enter your email address.
Under Who do you want to give an allowance to? enter the names of the allowance recipients.
Select Get started.
Enter your email address, first and last name, and a password to sign up for an Impact Account.
Select Create your Impact Account.
Check your email inbox and click the verification link to verify your email address.
Log in to your Impact Account—you’ll be taken to your new Charitable Allowance, where you can add recipients and schedule an allowance.

If you already have an Impact Account:

On the Home screen, select an Impact Account to go to the Impact Account Overview.
Select Charitable Allowance in the left navigation.
Select the blue Create a Charitable Allowance button.
You’ll be given the chance to add recipients and schedule an allowance.

Add a recipient

Add the people you want to give a charitable allowance to.

On the Charitable Allowance screen, to the right of Step 1: Add recipients, select + Add recipient.
Under Recipient’s name, enter the recipient’s name.
Choose how you want to manage their Charitable Allowance. You have control over how much money your kid receives and when, and how much access they have to the account.
Manage the allowance on the recipient’s behalf
Talk to your kids about what they care about in the world, and then give to charities or Giving Groups from their Impact Account. If you choose to manage the allowance on the recipient’s behalf, leave the Invite the recipient to manage this Impact Account field blank.
Invite the recipient to manage their allowance
This is best suited for kids or teens who have their own email address. They’ll be able to access their allowance and use it to support charities and Giving Groups themselves. As the owner of their Impact Account, you will be able to see how they’ve used their charitable allowance.
If you choose to invite the recipient to manage their allowance, enter their email address under Invite the recipient to manage this Impact Account. They’ll receive an email invitation to become an admin of the Impact Account.
Select Add recipient.

Schedule an allowance

Once you’ve added one or more recipients, you’ll be taken back to the Charitable Allowance screen where you can schedule one or multiple allowances.

To the right of Step 2: Schedule allowance, select Schedule allowance.
In the Amount column, enter an allowance amount per recipient.
In the Send date column, pick an upcoming date for the allowance to be sent.
Select the Frequency: Weekly, Monthly, or Annually.
Select Schedule.

Once the Charitable Allowance is set up, you can also schedule new allowances for existing recipients by selecting the blue Schedule allowance button on the right side of the Charitable Allowance screen.

Manage recipients

Remove a recipient from a Charitable Allowance

On the Charitable Allowance screen, select the three dots in the top-right corner of the recipient’s grey card.
Select Remove from Charitable Allowance.
If you also want to close their Impact Account, select the checkbox.
Select Remove to confirm.

Manage allowances

Edit an allowance

On the Charitable Allowance screen, find the recipient whose allowance you want to edit under Scheduled allowances.
Select the three dots to the right of the allowance amount.
Select Edit.
Edit the allowance Amount, Send date, and/or Frequency.
Select Save.

Pause or resume an allowance

On the Charitable Allowance screen, find the recipient whose allowance you want to edit under Scheduled allowances.
Select the three dots to the right of the allowance amount.
Select Pause to pause an allowance.
Select Resume to resume an allowance.

Delete an allowance

On the Charitable Allowance screen, find the recipient whose allowance you want to edit under Scheduled allowances.
Select the three dots to the right of the allowance amount.
Select Edit.
At the bottom of the screen, select Delete.
Select Delete again to confirm.

Accept a Charitable Allowance invite

For kids and teens

You’ll receive an invite to receive your Charitable Allowance via email.

Select the blue Accept invitation button in the email invite.
Enter your email address, first and last name, and a password to sign up for an Impact Account.
Select Create your Impact Account.
Check your email inbox and click the verification link to verify your email address.
Log in to your Impact Account—you’ll be taken to the Charitable Allowance screen, where you can see and access allowances that you receive.
Select a Charitable Allowance card to see the details of your allowance, including amount and frequency.
Select the blue Explore button to find charities and Giving Groups to send your allowance to.
